Israeli Strike Kills Nephew and Secretary of Hezbollah Chief Naim Qassem in Beirut

The Israeli military announced on April 9 that it had killed Ali Yusuf Harshi, the nephew and personal secretary of Hezbollah secretary-general Naim Qassem, in an overnight strike on Beirut.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated the strike targeted Harshi in the Lebanese capital and described him as a close aide to the Hezbollah leader. The operation is part of Israel’s ongoing campaign against the Iran-backed group amid the wider regional conflict that escalated after Hezbollah joined Iran’s side in early March 2026.
Harshi’s death comes as Israel has intensified targeted strikes against Hezbollah leadership and infrastructure. Defense Minister Israel Katz had previously designated Naim Qassem himself as a “marked target for elimination” following Hezbollah rocket attacks on Israel.
Hezbollah has not issued an official statement on the killing of Harshi. The group has faced repeated leadership losses since the assassination of its longtime leader Hassan Nasrallah in 2024, yet it continues to operate under Qassem’s command.
The strike fits a pattern of Israeli operations aimed at degrading Hezbollah’s command structure. Israel has accused the group of rearming in violation of a 2024 US-backed ceasefire and has conducted regular airstrikes on suspected targets in Lebanon.
The development is likely to heighten tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border and could complicate ongoing diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation in the region.
