Rocket Attack Hits Iraqi Army Base in Baghdad

A rocket struck an Iraqi Army base in Baghdad on Monday, causing material damage but no reported casualties, according to Iraqi security sources.

The attack targeted a military facility inside the capital. Security forces have launched an investigation to identify the source of the rocket and those responsible.

Tactical Military Analysis

This strike on a regular Iraqi Army base  rather than a US or Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) position  is noteworthy. It suggests one of three possibilities:

  • A misfired rocket from a pro-Iran militia
  • An intentional attempt to create internal divisions within Iraq’s security forces
  • A deliberate escalation to pressure the Iraqi government into taking a stronger anti-US stance

Since the US-Israeli campaign against Iran began in late February 2026, Iraq has become a secondary battleground. Pro-Iran armed groups have launched dozens of rocket and drone attacks against US targets, while retaliatory strikes have hit PMF and militia positions inside Iraq.

The Iraqi government remains in a difficult position — trying to maintain sovereignty while powerful Iran-backed factions operate within its official security structure.
